The Backbone
My Experience
Why I Care...
Imagine being denied medical care or mistreated by a doctor who is supposed to be someone you can trust. You may be asking yourself why a professional would ever do something like that to a patient, another human being, and the answer to your question is simple. The answer could be because of what you look like, what you believe in, who you love, who you are as a person and many other answers along those lines. My name is Alisa Alba and I believe that we can change the view people have of doctors as the next generation of medicine.
What's My Goal
To begin, I believe that all medical spaces should be safe spaces especially those with respect to women. As a woman, I have had my fair share of horror stories in medical practices all because of what I look like. If you were wondering what about me would cause doctors to turn me away and mistreat me, I’ll give you the answer. I identify as a fat, cisgender, straight Hispanic woman. It’s the fat part that doctors and most people are disturbed by. However, just because I’m fat doesn’t mean you have the right to deny me or mistreat me as a doctor. These personal experiences shocked me and opened my eyes to a variety of other what-if scenarios. For example, if doctors treated me the way they did because I was fat what if I was transgender, had a wife, or Muslim how would I be treated then? It was then that I promised myself, I would always practice holding safe spaces and implement those practices into my future medical office too.

As a result of my trauma, my dream was born and has grown into what it is today. My dream is to be able to help all types of women regardless of their sexual orientation, sexual identity, religion, color, body size, sexual activity, and the many more combinations that people can come in through the safe space that will one day be my practice. I have a dream that women will be comfortable enough to talk to doctors again freely without the shame, guilt, and judgment that we too often feel from doctors now.
My Mission
My Work
How I've Started
To help me support my goal of safe and judgment-free spaces in medicine, I have worked on and presented numerous projects concerning growth mindset, coping strategies and flow for 2-3 years now. These experiences have given me great exposure to different types of people and ways of thinking. I have also worked with many different students and learning styles through my work as a volunteering teaching assistant for the Human Anatomy course at UCF. This experience highlights key characteristics of myself which are being a leader and someone who enjoys helping others. I’ve also gotten the pleasure of working for a wonderful neurologist and I got to see firsthand how doctors interact with their patients. This opportunity gave me insight into patient care and the doctor-patient relationship in a medical setting. My diverse background of work will benefit me as I take my first step toward my goal of becoming an obstetrician-gynecologist.
Now is the time to not only fulfill my dream of making a change in the world but OUR dream as the next generation of medicine.
